Position: Sustainability Energy Modelling Consultant

Status: Fulltime, 37.5 hours/week

Position Profile

As a Sustainability Energy Modelling Consultant you will work with the Integrated Design Sustainability Team to develop the best life cycle solutions for Building Design. Calculations and responsibilities will include Energy Modelling for Permits, LEED Certifications, Renewable Energy Performance calculations, Net Zero Analysis, and Energy Simulations for Design, regulatory compliance and energy consumption, targeting and monitoring.

In this role you will also help clients improve their project's environmental performance through expert guidance on how to lower their embodied and operational carbon footprint, comply with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and other sustainability standards, and minimize or offset their energy loads and consumption.

As part of a specialized Building Sustainability group within a larger Mechanical and Electrical engineering, telecom, lighting design and commissioning firm, this position responds to and balances the needs of both internal and external clients.


Responsibilities

  • Assist project team during planning, design and construction with identifying and implementing building practices that increase resource efficiency, reduce carbon footprints, use sustainable materials, offer increased occupant health and safety, and integrate low impact development principles
  • Perform accurate and concise research, analysis, and technical calculations to make recommendations to project teams that facilitate decision making on sustainable building projects. Examples include thermal envelope, water efficiency, refrigerant type and quantity, ASHRAE 62.1 outdoor air, ASHRAE 55 thermal comfort, renewable energy generation, and daylighting
  • Prepare, maintain and submit LEED certification documentation
  • Perform software-based mechanical peak load calculations, hourly energy simulations and analyses, geo-exchange field sizing calculations, renewable energy calculations, shading analyses
  • Analyze and calculate building envelope effective thermal performance
  • Efficiently perform take-offs from design documents
  • Perform quality assurance checks on load and energy calculations, including troubleshooting energy model outputs using detailed hourly report
  • Perform life cycle cost and net present value calculations for design options
  • Engage and develop a relationship with clients through their day-to-day project contact and participate in client kick off and client meetings
  • Work closely with project lead to understand project scope, client expectations, and CEL role in meeting project sustainability goals
  • Develop and deliver contractor workshops to facilitate sustainability credit achievement and certification documentation
  • Work closely with Gruen/CEL leadership to prioritize work and ensure effective delivery of projects assigned to the team
  • Prepare quality work assignments that support the management of project budgets and performance
  • Develop and/or review project sustainability specifications and materials research
  • Provide sustainability technical assistance to support other delivery teams or review work, training or other unique projects
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2-5 years' relevant and demonstrated sustainable industry knowledge and experience in green building certifications and energy modelling with a background in building science, architecture, engineering, design and construction, operations and building management
  • Possess degree or diploma from a recognized University or College in Mechanical, Building or Sustainability Engineering or Technology
  • Possess LEED AP BD+C accreditation
  • Familiar with other sustainability frameworks such as TGS, Passive House, WELL
  • Accreditations such as BEMP, Passive House Consultant or WELL AP are assets
  • Strong knowledge of building and energy codes, standards, and protocols referenced in sustainability standards (e.g. OBC, TGS, NECB, ASHRAE 90.1, 62.1, 55)
  • Strong skills in the following computer software's or tools Excel, eQuest, IESVE, HAP, THERM, WINDOW, Heat3, FramePLUS
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • General design and construction knowledge
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deliverables
  • Ability to work and research independently when required
  • Maintains a positive and collaborative attitude and supports a positive work culture
  • Possess strong analytical and time management skills
